Spellcasting Teamwork Feats

I love casters. Sure, my first character was a fighter. But once I learned the rules of the game, my next character was an fighter/mage (elven bladesinger to be exact). I was hooked on magic. 9 out of 10 of my PCs can cast magic, and probably 8 of those 9 cast arcane magic. Part of my love of magic users, was the variety of skills to let us come up with some completely different ways of handling situations. For the last 5 years, every party I have been a part of has had at least one arcane caster, and for the past few years, our RotR campaign has had an arcanist and witch that have gone to lengths to cast complimentary spells on enemies when they weren’t buffing the party or debuffing the enemy. We really wanted something more cooperative, so we put together early versions of the following feats. After a year or so, I decided to tweak them, add a new one, and share them with you all.

The two basic ideas being addressed by these feats are: trying to use metamagic feats at low levels and having multiple casters help each other by casting the same spell at the same time. One is hard to do because you don’t have access to higher level slots and the other currently provides no benefit. Additionally, at low levels, you generally become useless after using your one or two spells. By simply assisting another caster to improve their spells, you change how effective you both are as casters, which can get more use out of the few spells you have.

Spell Assist (Teamwork)

By practicing casting the same spell at the same target, you have learned bolster an ally’s spell.

Prereq: Caster level 1st

Benefit: Whenever you are within 30 feet of an allied spellcaster with this feat, that is casting a spell you are capable of casting (memorized for wizards, prepared for arcanists, known for sorcerers, etc.), you may spend your action assisting in the casting of the spell.

By assisting in the casting, you may increase the DC of the spell by +1 or add a +2 bonus to overcome spell resistance. At 10th level, the DC is increased to +2 and the bonus to spell resistance is increased to +4.

Two casters may assist in this way, but the same bonus cannot be applied more than once.

All casters must have the spell components required to cast the spell. All casters must act on the same initiative through the use of readied actions and are considered casting for the normal casting time of the spell. If the spell’s origin is the caster, then the casters must be adjacent. If any of the casters are disrupted, the primary caster must make a concentration check with the same DC as the check that failed, except that he gets a +1 for each additional caster still casting.

Metamagic Assist (Teamwork)

By practicing casting the same spell at the same target, you have learned to lend your metamagic abilities to others.

Prereq: Caster level 3rd

Benefit: Whenever you are within 30 feet of an allied spellcaster with this feat, that is casting a spell you are capable of casting (memorized for wizards, prepared for arcanists, known for sorcerers, etc.), you may spend your action assisting in the casting of the spell.

By assisting in the casting, you may apply a metamagic feat that you have to the spell as it is being cast. The primary caster of the spell need not have the metamagic feat, but the spell level modifier cannot be higher than +3. You must expend a spell of a level equal to the level modifier of the metamagic feat.

Multiple casters may assist in this way, but the same feat cannot be applied more than once. A feat can, however, be divided among assisting casters. This means two assisting casters can each spend a 1st level spell to add a single +2 metamagic feat to a spell as it is being cast.

All casters must have the spell components required to cast the base spell.

Spell Barrage (Teamwork)

By practicing casting the same spell at the same target, you have learned to overwhelm your target.

Prereq: Caster level 5th

Benefit: Whenever you are within 30 feet of an allied spellcaster with this feat, that is casting a spell you are capable of casting (memorized for wizards, prepared for arcanists, known for sorcerers, etc.), you may spend your action assisting in the casting of the spell.

By assisting in the casting, you cast the same base spell as it is being cast, optionally modified by any metamagic feats you know. The primary caster of the spell need not have the metamagic feats. You expend the spell as normal.

Multiple casters may assist in this way.

All spells take effect at the same time with the following modifications. The primary caster’s save DCs (or attack rolls as appropriate) gain a +1 bonus per assisting caster, and a failed save against one caster counts as failing against all casters. All damage from all spells is counted as from a single source for the purposes of DR, resistance, and massive damage.
